BAS Service Provider
What is a BAS Service Provider?
- A BSP (BAS Service Provider) is more than just a bookkeeper.
- A BSP is someone who is approved by the ATO to calculate, prepare and lodge Business activity Statements (BAS) on behalf of their clients.
Why is this different to a bookkeeper printing the information from a software program?
- The current ATO legislation S251L prohibits anyone from providing a BAS service unless they are a Registered Tax Agent or working under the direction of a Registered Tax Agent.
- At present there are many people calling themselves bookkeepers and preparing BAS for clients who do not meet the ATO legislation. These people are in breach of the law. There are many who would claim that as long as the client fills in the manual BAS form themselves that they are not providing a BAS Service. This is also incorrect. The ATO has made if very clear to the bookkeeping industry that BAS Service is not simply the completion of the BAS form but is in fact much more.
- HBS takes pride in ensuring all its services meet current ATO legislation. Therefore through our membership with ABN we have in place a system that ensures all Business Activity Statements prepared are certified by a Registered Tax Agent
The current BAS Service Provider legislation is under review with the ATO and a new legislation is due for release sometime next year. As soon as this new legislation is released we will update this page to keep you fully informed.
Please give our office a call if you would like to discuss the BAS Service Provider legislation in detail and how this would affect your choice of bookkeeper.
